The Long Beach Unified School District apologized Monday after a student at Cabrillo High School posted racist photos on social media.
The photo appears to have been taken during a rally on the school’s gym campus, but a group of students lined up with racist words spelled out on a t-shirt.
As the district said it was deeply disappointed with the disturbing and offensive photos, Cabrillo High School called the act unacceptable and apologised for the harm it caused their community.
“We want to be clear. This type of behavior is not tolerated or tolerated anywhere in Cabrillo High School or our district,” the administrator at Cabrillo High School wrote in a statement. “Immediate steps are being taken to deal with the situation and we are working with all relevant parties to ensure accountability.”
The statement says school staff are aware that the photos are being shared among students on social media. They advised members of the school community on what they should be careful about when sharing images and encouraged open and thoughtful discussions.
Community leaders who said the painting sparked anger among parents demanded accountability from the school and district to discipline those involved.
The school is currently investigating the incident and urges students to report inappropriate behavior.
