The family of the Laguna Niguel couple who have been in the US for 35 years say they are heartbroken about their obstruction deportation.
Lovers of Gladys and Nelson Gonzalez say the recently grandparent couple has been taken to a Louisiana detention center where they are facing deportation. Neither of them have a criminal history, but they are set to return to their hometown of Colombia.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement admitted that neither Nelson nor Gladys have a criminal record, but said the couple violated immigration law and had a final removal order.
“My parents are good people and they don’t deserve this, so it breaks my heart,” said Stephanie Gonzalez, the couple’s daughter.
According to Stephanie, her parents were taken into custody on February 21 during regular check-in with an ice agent. They are expected to be deported by the end of the month.
An online fundraiser has been launched to support the couple when they return to Colombia.
The move comes as part of President Donald Trump’s commitment to cracking down on immigration. His administration has pledged to deport individuals on criminal convictions or pending charges, but new ICE data reveals that half of the individuals detained have no criminal history.
