The judge orders Atlas Metal to stop operations at Watt, citing health and safety concerns – NBC Los Angeles

A Los Angeles County judge ordered Atlas Iron and Metal Co. in Watts to stop as the company and its two owners face felony charges.

The judge has decided to hold Matthew Weisenberg, one of Atlas Metal’s co-owners, on $1 million bail.

Other co-owner Gary Weisenberg was released over the weekend for $100,000, citing age, health issues and cognitive issues.

The metal recycling company owner was jailed Thursday after the business was found to be in violation of its pre-trial agreement.

This comes amid a 25 count indictment 70 years ago, claiming that businesses are increasingly violating environmental and safety regulations by illegally disposing of hazardous waste.

Criminal cases are the latest legal issues for companies facing unauthorized, deposits of dangerous waste, failure to maintain or operate facilities to minimize the chances of fires and explosions, and accusations of intentionally disposing of citizens.

In 2023, then-distrix lawyer George Gascon announced his first criminal filing. The indictment of the Great Ju trial was reported last year shortly after the explosion on August 12th.

No one was injured.

In August 2024, students from nearby Jordan High School arrived on the first day of their class after winter break, causing an explosion at the facility. This was the third explosion at the facility since 2002.

The DA’s office says school soil samples showed excessive levels of lead and zinc, and metal debris were also found on campus.

Many people are celebrating the suspension of their company operations.

In a statement, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman called it “historic” for the company. He said: “As allegedly in the court, Atlas Metal collects all the benefits and the kids at Jordan High School take all the risks. This won’t hold back.”

Councillor Tim Makosker called the shutdown a “winning.”

“The Watts community has endured toxic exposures for too long,” he said. “This is a step towards ensuring that all residents can live, learn and thrive in a safe and healthy environment.”

The pre-trial hearing of the case is set for March 28th.
