The alleged attacks on a state prison officer by a 43-year-old inmate transferred from Los Angeles County, the California Department of Amendment and Rehabilitation Department were announced Tuesday, and are under investigation.
The March 18 incident at the Salinas Valley State Jail in Soledad reportedly unfolded just before 9am about what authorities call “dayroom floors.”
According to a CDCR news release, inmate Anthony G. Ramirez is believed to have pulled an improvised weapon from his waistband before attempting to attack members of the custody staff.
“The staff responded quickly, disarmed Ramirez and handcuffed him without handcuffing,” the release elaborated.

Both Ramirez and the custody staff were reviewed by healthcare workers who were not seriously injured.
Officials said the California Association of Correctional and Peace Officers was notified of the incident and prison staff were provided with peer support services and employee assistance programs.
