Dozens of mourners gathered Tuesday evening to honor the life of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Detective who was killed when he crashed while chasing.
The flowers and candles were placed in the crash where 36-year-old Hector Quevas Jr. lost his life. He died on duty Monday, chasing the driver and crashed near the intersection of Seneca and Elvedo Roads in Victorville.
“He was loved by many and respected by the community, and he was a good person,” said Pedro Rivera, the uncle of the fallen lieutenant.
Quebus is loved as a stand-up individual whose death is a deep loss to the community. He is survived by his wife, two young children, parents and siblings.
“He was good at everything,” said Quebus cousin Raufton Addisons. “The Church of Football Coach, everything he put in his heart, he’s finished. He was a really nice guy. This should never have happened to him.”
Quebus, a six-year veteran of the unit, started out as a police officer. San Bernardino Police Station Chief Darren Goodman recalled meeting him in an interview with Upland Police Station.

“It was clear he had a passion for doing his job,” Goodman said. “Talking with him, learning more about his personal background, and I realized how committed he was to the community. He was very involved in his church. He was a young husband and father.
These feelings were echoed by the family of Quebus.
“A lot of people were scared in our family,” said Eljay Rivera, Quebus cousin. “We chose a variety of routes and he chose the best. He got the farthest, the best. That’s what I can say. He took the chances we didn’t.”
In response to the fatality, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the state capitol flag to be flew by semi-staff.
“I’m going to miss his love and miss everything I couldn’t learn from him,” Rivera said.
