A reward of up to $50,000 is being offered in exchange for information that leads to the arrest of a driver involved in the crash that killed a 4-year-old boy on Crenshaw.
The report was reported at the corner of Crenshaw Boulevard and Rodeo Place at just after 11pm on Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Law enforcement said the car was heading north at Crenshaw when it lost control and reached business at the rodeo. Witnesses saw the driver travelling at a speed of 70-90 mph and reported that it was well above the speed limit.
“There’s a skidmark that suggests that speed is important before a collision and there’s a lot of force,” said LAPD detective Ryan Moreno.
The boy was a passenger in one of the cars. He died of injuries while being taken to a nearby hospital. Police said the child’s car had no booster seats or car seats.
Authorities said the driver, a 37-year-old man, initially stayed at the scene but managed to escape at some point. The relationship between the driver, the child and the two other passengers is unknown, but police believe they are all known to each other. The other two passengers were called women in their 30s, one of which was believed to be the mother of a boy.
“It’s a shame last night that you didn’t get the kind of cooperation you normally do something like this, especially with young children who have connections with the people involved in the car and their families,” Moreno said.
The investigation is underway. At this point, police believe drugs and alcohol may be the cause of the crash.
