The El Paso sector on the southwest border has become the busiest in the country as the overall encounters at the border continue to freefall.

The El Paso sector, which expanded from Hadspeth County, Texas to the New Mexico-Arizona Line, has become the busiest sector on the southwest border in February, marking the latest US Customs Protection Facility (CBP) data, which recorded 2,110 envelopes last month.

Overall, CBP data shows 8,347 encounters at the southwest border in February. This is a spectacular 94.1% drop from the same month last year, when 124,215 encounters were recorded.

The El Paso sector has won the crown for the busiest people, but the region’s only over 2,000 encounters represent a significant year-over-year decline from figures recorded in February last year, when the sector met 23,919. El Paso’s February figures also fell from last month, with the sector recording 4,870 encounters in January 2025.

El Paso made the San Diego sector busiest on the southwest border in February, with San Diego recording 1,650 encounters last month, down 94.8% from the previous year. San Diego’s figures also fell dramatically from what was recorded last month, when the sector recorded 6,390 encounters.

The San Diego sector chief said:

The CBP extends eastward from the California coast to the southwest border. There are Texas and the US Gulf. Several sectors along the border recorded 200 total encounters in February, including the El Centro sector in Imperial Valley, California and the Big Bend sector in West Texas.

El Centro Sector recorded the fewest encounters in February, with CBP data showing only 102, a 91.6% reduction from last year. The Big Ben Sector has not been far behind, recording just 165 encounters in February, a 71% drop from the same month last year.
