San Bernardino County prosecutors are pursuing murder charges against a serial car burglar who was accused of leading representatives in a chase that ended in a crash that killed Deputy Hector Kuevas Jr.
Ryan Dwayne Turner Jr., 22, faces murder charges and avoids peace officers by ignoring safety and vehicle theft.
The pursuit took place Monday in Victorville, but according to deputies, Turner Jr. refused to hand over the vehicle when caught driving the reportedly stolen. The pursuit reached speeds of more than 100 mph as Turner ran through the red light in his attempt to escape, authorities said.
Shortly before 11am, the 36-year-old Quebus collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Elvado and Seneca roads. The shock split his service vehicle in half and unloaded nearby power lines.

He was declared dead at the scene.
A woman in a small black sedan who was also involved in the collision was rushed to the hospital with unspecified injuries.
Court records show Turner’s criminal history includes several arrests and convictions for stealing the car. In 2024 he stole a vehicle in Rialto, reaching speeds above 90 mph, providing time to lead police in chases that ended in a crash.
“This is not the first time Turner has escaped when he was caught in a stolen car, and this certainly takes into account the idea that this is a murder,” San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason Anderson said at a press conference Wednesday.
County Sheriff Shannon Dykas also spoke at a press conference and shared the message with his deputies and the public.
“As you move forward… this is an assertion that this county will hold criminals accountable, and the work you do every day makes a difference for all of our communities,” Dikas said.
