A Bay Area man who stolen, carjacked and shot Monterey County after being convicted of a day’s crime is facing up to 100 years behind the bar.

On Friday, the ju umpire was in possession of controlled substances with firearms, a violent felony in carjacking, attempted carjacking, theft, first-degree robbery, shooting an occupied vehicle, possession of a firearm and ammunition, said operators in the Atleite area of Monterry County.

Judge Jennifer O’Keefe ruled that Matangi maintained two previous “strikes” convictions within the meaning of California’s three strike laws.

The Matangi rampage on September 18, 2023 began when he crashed into a locked gate in the Gonzalez High School parking lot, abandoned the vehicle, carjacked a nearby driver with a muzzle, and fled north on Highway 156.

About 40 minutes later, Matangi caused the collision after circulating on the US southbound highway 101 for target traffic on the westbound highway 156.

After the crash, Matangi leaves the stolen cars behind and begins shooting at people who were trying to help those involved in the shipwreck before they escape. He escapes to a nearby parking lot and attempts to carjack another driver with the muzzle, but fails.

From there, the prosecutor says that Matangi encountered a nearby community where he broke into the residence by tearing the screens in the window. Upon entering, he stole the homeowner’s keys at the muzzle and drove into the San Benito County section of Aroma.

Shortly after arriving at Aroma, Matangi abandoned the stolen car and stole the golf cart. He left Kurt in the residence and hid in a storage unit elsewhere. It tells Matangi to leave when he was discovered by the unit owner.

Matangi complied and began walking along Carpinteria Road, where she was found by a deputy of the San Benito County Sheriff. After he shook the gun at the aide, Monterey County Sheriff’s deputies arrived and arrested Matangi.

When Matangi was arrested, he carried a .40 caliber semi-automatic firearm, multiple magazines with live ammunition, a small buggy of methamphetamine and keys to the last stolen car. His previous felony beliefs against robbery and carjacking prohibited him from owning firearms.

Matangi is scheduled to be sentenced on March 28th and faces up to 100 years of life in prison.
