The Pentagon is set to announce its decision on Friday regarding a next-generation fighter contract worth more than $20 billion, despite prior concerns about budget constraints and changing priorities.
The next-generation Air Dominance (NGAD) program will replace Lockheed Martin’s F-22 Raptor with a fighter jet built to fight alongside the drone.

Lockheed and Boeing compete directly on all engineering and manufacturing development phase contracts with more than $20 billion winners.
Air Force spokesmen and representatives from Boeing and Lockheed did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The winner of the high stakes contest will receive orders of hundreds of billions of dollars over the life of the contract, supporting the business for decades.

NGAD was conceived as a “family of systems” centered around sixth generation fighters, with the aim of providing the United States with advanced aviation control capabilities to counter nearly peer enemies like China and Russia.
Under President Donald Trump’s administration, who took office in January, the program has moved forward after a period of uncertainty that poses doubts the future of the next generation of fighter jets.
Last year, the program faced potential delays or scalebacks due to budgetary pressures and cost overruns in other Air Force programs. There was also discussion about rethinking basic design elements and changing resources to unmanned drone programs.
The signal design for the expected announcement finalized last year will be chosen for NGAD.

Lockheed was recently removed from the competition to build a next-generation career-based stealth fighter for the Navy. Losing the NGAD contract could double international sales of the F-35 Fighter Jet Program and F-16 Jet.
