According to California State Parks, wildflowers in Southern California State Parks this season are expected to be small due to sub-average winter rainfall.
The growth of wild flowers depends on a delicate mix of weather factors, such as appropriate amounts of rain, sunlight, seasonal temperature patterns, and wind.
“The past few storms have had 0.6 inches of rain, but it’s not enough to significantly improve the rate of poppy germination,” said Poppy Reserve in California, California in a Facebook post.

Poppy Reserve received significantly less rainfall compared to 2017 (pictured on the right), where we witnessed extraordinary flowers compared to this fall and winter season (pictured on the left).
Despite the bright flowers, the park said it still offers outdoor recreation opportunities for diverse wildlife.
“The best trail to hiking for flowers is the ADA trail,” the park said in a statement. “This trail has baby poppies and miniature bread slowly growing and can be a good trail in around three weeks.”
