Hegseth signs memo to cut more than $580 million in “wasteful spending” on DOD

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegses said the unnecessary spending was over.

“We’ve returned with another simple update on our efforts to reduce wasteful spending and quickly reduce it at the Department of Defense,” Heggs announced in a post on X.

“Today, I am signing a memo directing the termination of a DOD contract of more than $580 million with grants that do not match the priorities of this President or this division.

Hegseth said he is transparent with Americans and shares some details of the cancelled agreements and grants.

Doge says 239 contracts have been cancelled over two days, including a grant to teach Transfermers about “food justice.”

“There is a HR software effort that was supposed to cost a year and $36 million, but instead, it takes eight years and now has a budget of $280 million, and it doesn’t provide what the budget is supposed to be.

Hegseth added that they have discovered another batch worth $360 million, decarbonising decarbonised emissions from naval vessels that are part of the Obama Biden Green Agenda.

“It’s $6 million, $5.2 million, and $5.2 million, which diversifies and engages the navy by involving undervalued BIPOC students and academics. Another $9 million at the university approaches fair AI and machine learning models.

President Donald Trump Pete Hegseth was chosen as Secretary of Defense at the completion of a confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee in Capitol, Washington, Tuesday, January 14th, 2025.

On this third point, Heggs said other cuts on Thursday included wasted spending on external consulting services.

“Gartner’s contract with McKinsey is $30 million. That’s about purchasing an unused license. So, if you add that, a $580 million DOD agreement and grants are helping to cut today,” says Hegseth.

Hegseth said more than $800 million in wasted spending was cancelled in the first few weeks as DoD partnered with Doge.

“They work hard. We work hard with them. We are grateful for the work they are doing. And we are coming more.

“So, I might not waste any more time now. Sign this. How about that? This will be official. We’ll keep going for you guys,” Heggs said as he signed the order.

“Have you ever seen this level of transparency? It’s amazing. Thank you @secdef,” commented on Hegseth’s post.

In February, Hegseth promised to work with Doge to reduce wasteful spending at the Department of Defense.

“We’re partnering with them. It’s been postponed for a long time. The Department of Defense has a huge budget, but we have to take responsibility,” Hegseth previously told Fox News.

As of Thursday afternoon, the 239 “wasteful” contract, with a $1.7 billion “ceiling value,” had ended in two days, Doge announced.
