Liberal Canadian lawmakers have repeatedly referred to Canada as the US “five state” and claimed that President Donald Trump repeatedly committed “acts of war” in order to level the country’s tariffs.

Angus was responding to a clip of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, speaking to reporters for the recent G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting to Canada. Rubio has been repeatedly asked by reports to oppress Trump, who calls Canada the “51st nation.”
“The president argued about why Canada thinks it’s better to join the United States… for economic purposes,” Rubio said on March 14 when asked about Trump’s “51st State” comments. “There is a disagreement between the president’s position and the Canadian government’s position. I don’t think that would bring about a mystery, and it wasn’t the topic of conversation.
Rubio further explained that the origins of the “51st State” rhetoric came during a meeting between Trump and former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trump began using Canada’s “51st Provincial” title in November 2024 after winning the election.

Trump had met Trudeau. And Trudeau basically said that if the US imposes tariffs on Canada, Canada cannot survive as a nation-state, and at that point the president said, “Well, you should be a nation.” And that’s what started out,” Rubio said of the Trump Trudeau conference. “He had a discussion about why Canada would be better off joining the US from an economic standpoint, etc. He repeatedly created that argument.
Trudeau announced his resignation as prime minister in January after taking the position for nine years. Mark Carney was sworn in as the country’s next prime minister on March 14 after being elected as the new leader of Canada’s liberal party at the beginning of the month.
In an interview, Angus said boycotting US products over Canadian US tariffs would “punish” the US.

“The boycott Canada launched against the US has been punished. In January, they were told that a 10% reduction in Canada’s travel to the US would cost 140,000 jobs,” he continued.
Trump leveled 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports from other countries on March 12, but Canada has been set to face a 25% tax on all imports from April 2.

“This is my problem in Canada,” Trump told Fox News. “Canada subsidizes $200 billion a year, so it was meant to be the 51st state. It doesn’t need cars, it doesn’t need lumber, it has a lot of wood. … No energy needed. No cars needed.
