(Nexstar) – George Foreman’s Family – the prolific professional boxer, Olympian and famous entrepreneur behind George Foreman Grill – says the 76-year-old passed away on Friday, March 21st, “surrounded by his loved ones.”

In an Instagram post, the family said: “A humanitarian, Olympian and two-time heavyweight champion, he was deeply respected. He is the power, discipline, conviction and protector of his legacy for good, to fight tirelessly to retain his good name for his family.”

Foreman was born on January 10, 1949 in Marshall, Texas, and later moved to California, where he began training properly for boxing. Foreman’s massive debut took place at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. There, Foreman won the gold medal after beating Soviet boxer Jonas Chepris.

The boxer’s early amateur career broke several records with victory in various tournaments. Foreman’s professional boxing career began in 1969, starting with a three-round knockout fight in New York City, followed by multiple other knockout wins.

Among Foreman’s most famous battles was the “Sunshine Showdown” against heavyweight champion Joe Frazier, where Foreman won a TKO in the second round. Perhaps Foreman’s most famous boxing match was the iconic “Rumble of the Jungle” on October 30, 1974. Ali proved to have won, but the foreman became famous due to the reveal and legacy of the battle.

Foreman’s last post on Instagram was November 5th, 2024, but it was a photo of a throwback from a fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas 30 years ago. The champion captioned the post. “I believed, so I believed in everything.” ”

Foreman is survived by his wife, Mary Joan Martery and his 12 children.

This is a developing story.
