Former Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Julio Uris was suspended Friday through an All-Star break by Major League Baseball under domestic violence policies with the Players Association.
Urias did not grant the contest to one count of misdemeanor domestic batteries last May. The penalty was Urias’ second in its policy after 20 games suspended in 2019. MLB returned from the restricted list on July 17th, saying free agents can sign any team.
The 28-year-old left-handed Urias has not pitched since September 1, 2023. He was arrested two days later outside the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles and took part in a major league soccer game on September 3rd, including Intermiami and Lionel Messi. The Ministry of Public Safety said that people who have not publicly identified publicly have contacted the physical altercation between men and women.
Urias was initially charged with a felony of serious injury to his spouse or roommate, and he was placed on administrative leave by MLB on September 6th.
Urias refused to admit the contest to one count of misdemeanor household batteries on May 1st the following year, as fees for four other misdemeanors were removed. Iver Pine, a spokesman for the Los Angeles city law firm, said Urias was placed on 36 months of summary probation and ordered to complete 30 days of community work. Urias also needs to complete a 52-week domestic violence counseling course, have no weapons, no weapons or violence, pay compensation to the victim and comply with the protection order.
“After reviewing all the evidence available, Urias has violated our policy and concluded that discipline is appropriate,” baseball committee member Rob Manfred said in a statement Friday.
MLB said URías was evaluated by the Joint Policy Committee established by the MLB and the Players Association and agreed to comply with any of its recommendations.
Urias agent Scott Bolas said the pitcher had not issued a statement.
Urias became a free agent after the 2023 World Series, after his $4.7 million one-year contract expired.
Urias was also arrested in May 2019 on suspicion of a household battery. While he was suspended by MLB, he was not charged by a city of LA attorney on the condition that he completed a 52-week domestic violence counseling program.
Over eight major league seasons, Urias is 60-25 with the Dodgers, with a 3.11 ERA. He led the National League in 2022 with ERA 2.16 and was a member of the team that won the 2020 World Series, earning 4-0 in six postseason appearances with saves and 1.17 ERA.
Urias became the first suspended player under domestic violence policy since New York Yankees pitcher Jimmy Cordero on July 5, 2023. Cordero spent last season with the Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan’s Pacific League and signed with Mexico’s Toroz de Tijuana this season.
Other punished under domestic violence policies include Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer, Yankees Closer Aroldis Chapman, Pitcher Domingo German, Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell, Toronto pitcher Roberto Osna, Colorado shortstop Jose Rays and Atlanta outfielder Olivera.
Tampa Bay Rays Short Stop Wonder Franco remains on the restricted list and has not played since August 12, 2023, but is not disciplined by MLB.
