(Nexstar) – Miller Gardner, 14, son of former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner, died sick while on vacation, the team announced Sunday.

The Yankees shared X’s statement from Brett and his wife Jessica. “It’s sad to announce the passing of my youngest son, Miller, who is strong in spirit.

The couple went on to say, “There are so many questions and few answers at this point.” Miller passed away “peacefully” in his sleep on Friday morning.

“Miller is our beloved son and brother, and we still can’t understand our lives without his infectious smile,” the statement continued. “He loved soccer, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He lived his life to the fullest every day.”

Gardner, who shares another son, Hunter, asked for privacy “in search for sorrow, seeking healing” and did not provide additional details.

In another statement, the team wrote, “The Yankees family is full of sadness after learning that Miller Gardner has passed.”

“Brett wasn’t the only one who literally grew up in this organization for over 17 years, as did his wife Jessica and two boys, Hunter and Miller,” the team added.

Brett Gardner, a South Carolina native who attended Charleston University, was drafted in 2008 by the Yankees. He spent his entire major league career in New York, earning the team’s 2016 Gold Gloves in the 2009 World Series.

“We are saddened with Brett, Jessica, Hunter, and their community of family and friends who lament the loss of Miller, who had sparks in his eyes and had an extroverted, lively personality, a warm and loving nature,” read the Yankees’ statement. “Our love for the Gardner family is unconditional and absolute, and we will provide enduring support at this point, understanding their desire for privacy.”

Miller Gardner was playing football in South Carolina, ESPN reported, wearing No. 11. According to Athletic, Miller also played as an outfielder and pitcher for baseball diamonds.

Gardner last played with the Yankees in 2021.
