A suspected robber of a vehicle was killed and a deputy was injured after a fatal foot pursuit was fatal in Southern California.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Office said a resident called at 8:03pm Friday to report someone being actively stolen outside their home in the 100 block of Walnut Street.
Reports say when the victim caught the suspect in his vehicle, the suspect took off and fled on foot.
Two deputies from Neko answered the phone and found the suspect. Later, Michael Ray Richard II, 39, of Phoenix, Arizona, was identified as walking through the area.
When deputies began to detain Richard, he pulled away and ran – starting a foot pursuit.
“Richard jumped over the wall and returned to the patrol unit, where he retrieved the bags he had been carrying during detention,” the department explained in the release.
When deputies caught up with Richard, they noticed that he was armed with a handgun.
“Richard struggled with his agent and fired the gun,” SBSD explained. “A fatal force encounter occurred and Richard was shot.”
Richard was later declared dead at the scene.
Authorities immediately did not provide further details about the struggle, but as a result, one lieutenant said he suffered minor injuries.
During subsequent investigations, SBSD said the detective found a second firearm in Richard’s bag.
