The two women killed in the crash over the weekend were sisters in the crash crash, where a DUI driver was allegedly suspected of traveling on the wrong side of the highway, police said.
The victim’s identity has not been officially released, but relatives say the victim, a 29-year-old woman and her 39-year-old sister, were linked. The young victim was the mother of a 1-year-old child and was also injured in the crash.
The incident happened shortly after moving eastward in the westbound lane of Pomona’s 60 Highway just after 11pm on Saturday, according to the California Highway Patrol. The crash crash happened on a highway near Reservoir Street when a driver in the wrong direction hit the Honda Civic, where the sisters were traveling.
Law enforcement has identified the driver as Rick Rodriguez, 24, of Pomona. He was taken to Pomona Valley Hospital with minor injuries and was later arrested for allegedly driving under the influence.
The victim’s relatives say the woman’s parents are in Mexico and cannot join other families in Southern California. Families in the area remain at risk at Children’s Hospital in Orange County, and remain on their side.
The investigation is underway.
