The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday will decide a series of measures aimed at protecting immigrants amid crackdowns managed by President Donald Trump.
Five allegations proposed by Councillor Hugo Soto Martinez, District 13 require businesses to report immigration and customs activities to the city, create a “right to know” campaign, and among other items, a “know your rights” campaign that supports state funding for legal defense against deportation.
In the first three months of his second term, Trump and his allies targeted immigrants and immigrants from various angles, reduced support for those in need, and expelled many.
One notable incident was a couple in the United States for 35 years, Laguna Niguel raising three children, a US citizen. Neither of them had a criminal record, but they were taken into custody and deported to Colombia.
One protester near the city hall pointed out Omar Lewis of KTLA. Even California faces an uncertain future as the state and many local governments declared sanctuaries for immigration.
“Immigrants are now afraid of now,” he said.
