Two Ventura County brothers have been arrested for drug trafficking schemes. Authorities say that after taking psychedelic mushrooms, at least one boy landed in the hospital, targeting local youth.
The hospitalized juvenile told detectives he purchased magic mushrooms through his brother who used social media and other messaging platforms to run drug delivery services, according to Ventura County Sheriff Det. Jonathan Schnelleger.
Enrique and Eric Benitez (18 and 26) were arrested this week on numerous drug-related charges after detectives were able to link them to school-age children across the county to hospitalized juveniles and other drug sales, Schnelegger said in a news release. The brothers are accused of selling psilocybin, an illegal psychedelic found in certain mushrooms. Vape with marijuana, marijuana and nicotine.
On Tuesday, detectives executed a search warrant at a residence affiliated with the brothers and found about 20 grams of psilocybin, a steaming device of 88 marijuana, 10 nicotine steaming devices and what Schneger called “a ton of loose marijuana.” The detective also found more than $2,000 in cash and a loaded handgun with no serial number known as the “ghost gun.”
Enrique and Eric Benitez were arrested on suspicion of selling controlled substances to minors, possessing firearms and controlled substances that are dangerous to children. Both bails were set at $250,000.
