President Donald Trump said he made a “very productive call” with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday.
“I’ve just finished talking with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. It was a very productive call. We agree with a lot and will meet right after the upcoming elections to tackle the elements of Canada’s politics, business and all other elements.
It was the first time two leaders had spoken. On Thursday, Carney said his “old relationship” with the United States was “end” and vowed to engage in renegotiation of the trade agreement.
Carney, 60, who won a liberal leader this month with 86% of votes after former prime minister Justin Trudeau stopped, spoke in Ottawa after meeting the country’s state premier.

“Based on the consolidation of our economy, strict security and military cooperation, our old relationship with the United States has ended,” he told reporters. “It will be time for a broad renegotiation of security and trade relations.”

“The obvious is that as Canadians we have an agency. We have power. We are the masters of our own home,” he said.

“We control our destiny. We can take away much more than foreign governments, including the US,” Carney added.
