The rapidly growing vegetation fire prompted evacuation orders for parts of INYO and Mono counties on Sunday afternoon.

The fire was first reported at 2:11pm in the area of Highway 6 and Silver Canyon Road in Bishop City, according to the Cal Fire San Bernardino unit.

Labeled as silver fire, the flame burned at least 150 acres and was moving east/northeast at “rapid speed,” officials said.

As of 8pm, the fire was mapped on 1,000 acres with 0% containment, and the Cal Fire BDU said it was still active with a thick brush.

“All resources remain on the scene,” Cal Fire said. “Evacuation orders and road closures remain while crews build containment.”

The department said at X-Post at 4pm that the silver fire jumped to Highway 6, threatening multiple structures and power lines.

“Aircraft, heavy equipment and additional engines were requested,” Cal Fire BDU said.

The crew arrived to face unfavourable weather conditions such as dry brushes and strong winds. One air attack, two tankers, at least one unit was sent or could not fly due to “extreme turbulence.”

The National Weather Service in Las Vegas reports that winds at the Bishop’s airport are gusts of winds 25-30 miles from the west/southwest, with relative humidity of around 10%.

With support from Mono County law enforcement, crews began evacuating White Mountain Estate by 5pm.

As of 6pm, the next zone still had forced evacuation orders for ICU-017-B, ICU-019, ICU-057-B, ICU-065, ICU-087-B, ICU-087-E and MCU-E039.
