The Georgia Legislature passed the bill on Monday, primarily along the party line to ban transgender girls or biological men from participating in women’s sports.

Also known as the “Riley Gaines Act of 2025,” SB 1 requires middle school, high school and university athletes to compete with sports teams that match their biological gender.

Toilets, locker rooms and bedrooms are restricted to allow only biological juveniles in designated spaces for boys and girls and biological girls.

The bill is currently facing the desk of Republican Brian Kemp, who is expected to sign the law. The measure is a priority for House Speakers Jon Burns and Lt Jones, both Republicans.

“The General Assembly sent a clear message. Biological men are not welcome in the sports and spaces of Georgia girls,” Burns said.

Jones said the general meeting “takes a historic step towards achieving the important goal of this session: the protection of women’s sports,” according to the outlet.

“I want to thank all the brave women and girls who shared my personal stories and helped shape this law,” Jones continued. “Their courage deserves praise and ensures that the rights of female athletes are preserved and protected by law. We look forward to seeing Brian Kemp, John Burns, John Burns speakers and female athletes standing with families across the state when the Riley Gaines Act of 2025 is signed into law. ”

The bill was named after former college swimmer Riley Gaines, who was put in public when Gaines and other female athletes criticized the participation of biological men in girls’ sports after competing with transgender swimmer Leah Thomas, who was forced to share a locker room.

“This incredible honor. There are few more valuable causes than protecting the next generation’s opportunities,” Gaines wrote to X after passing the Georgia home and the Senate on Monday.

Over 25 other states have already banned biological men from participating in women’s sports.

The measure was passed on the day of transgender visibility. In this visual world, trans people and their supporters marched in holding community gatherings and meetings against the law targeting LGBTQ+ people.
