President Donald Trump declared Wednesday to serve as the country’s “liberation day.” He is expected to enact a trade policy that emphasizes the “America First” mission that will help his administration end its dependence on goods made overseas.

Trump is expected to roll out his mutual tariff plans on Wednesday, which will collect additional taxes on countries that export goods to the US

“April 2, 2025 will go down as one of the most important days in modern history,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said at a White House reporter’s press conference on Tuesday. “Our country is one of the most open economies in the world and we have a consumer base.

“The lack of reciprocity contributes to the massive, sustained annual trade deficit that has destroyed our industry and split our major labor force,” she continued. “But starting tomorrow, America’s days have been stripped and finished. American workers and businesses will be first placed under President Trump, as he promised in the campaign trajectory.”

Trump is “always standing up for good negotiations,” the White House says, “Liberation Day” tariffs on April 2nd will be looming

What can Americans expect on April 2nd?

The White House has close lips in the details surrounding Trump’s planned tariff announcement, but only explains that after decades of unfair trading practices, mutual tariffs explain even in US arenas.

“In fact, Trump told the media on Monday. “And other countries understand because they’ve been torn us apart for 50 years.”

Trump and his administration have touted the tariff plan to encourage business in the US as the industry sets up shops in American soil to avoid tariffs and launches employment opportunities for American workers.

White House trade adviser Peter Navarro gave a preview in an interview with Fox News Sunday over the weekend that the new tariffs would generate $600 billion a year in the US, or $10 trillion in the future.

Details of the plan remain shrouded in mystery until Trump’s announcement, but Treasury Secretary Scott Becent previously picked out 15% of the world’s 15% of countries with trade imbalances with the US, calling them the “dirty 15” that will be the focus of tariff announcements.

“As we enter April 2nd, some of our worst trading partners have already come to Trump’s offer president… a huge reduction in tariffs that are very unfair,” Bescent said in an exclusive interview on “Morning with Maria” on Tuesday.

“I am optimistic that on April 2nd, there may not be any need to continue the tariffs as the transaction is negotiated in advance,” he added.

Wall Street companies believe tariffs and trade wars will increase the risk of recession

Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, also previewed that he has focused on 15 countries in 10 countries for tariff planning, but neither Bescent nor Hassett identified a country by name.

But Trump on Sunday pushed back that tariff plans affect “all countries” as well as the roughly 12 ranges.

“You start with every country,” Trump told Air Force 1 reporters. “Now, let’s see what happens. There are many countries.”

Trump on Monday added from his oval office that he was “good” for foreign countries compared to the way they charged the US.

Trump’s “Liberation Day” helps to create a new golden age for American workers

“We’re better than them,” he said he’s been talking to the media after signing an unrelated executive order on Monday. “We have a lot of countries, friends, enemies. I always say friends and enemies, but in many cases, friends are worse than enemies. They took advantage of us.

“The numbers are lower than what they’ve been charging us, and in some cases they may be significantly lower. But we probably have world obligations,” he continued. “But we become very kind. In relative terms, we become very kind.”

The Trump administration is expected to deploy an “external revenue service” that oversees tariff collection under the leadership of the Commerce Department.

The highly anticipated trade announcement has caused uncertainty regarding the cost of American goods. Leavitt reiterated on Tuesday that it was “focusing on lowering inflation, lowering energy prices, and massive deregulation efforts), while also focusing on effectively implementing tariffs.

Leavitt said Tuesday that tariffs will take effect immediately in response to Trump’s announcement on Wednesday.

The president is expected to announce his tariff plans from Rose Garden, and his cabinet will join in, Leavitt told the media on Monday.

Where did the liberation date come from?

Countries around the world celebrate their respective liberation dates, usually marking the end of war and oppression, as well as US Independence Day.

For example, many European countries celebrate various liberation days to commemorate the anniversary of their respective victory in Nazi Germany during World War II.

Trump and his tariffs find an unlikely alliance in the boss of the auto union.

Trump previously described 2024 Election Day as “liberation day” and was sworn in as the country’s 47th president on January 20th.

“January 20, 2025 is the day of liberation for American citizens,” Trump said in his inaugural speech. “We hope that our recent presidential election will be remembered as the largest and most consequential election in our country’s history.”

“As our victory has shown, the whole country is rapidly united behind our agenda, with a dramatic increase from almost every element of our society: old and young, men and women, African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, urban, suburban, rural,” he said.
