There is also a risk if China destroys satellites in orbit, if it is an action that could cause a global catastrophe, Saltzman continues to threaten the safety of the spacecraft, pointing to the remaining wreckages from Russia’s 2021 anti-sanitary missile tests and China’s 2007 tests.
China’s space-based targeting capabilities have “have grown the most impressively” in recent years, Saltzman said that hundreds of satellites are now dedicated to tracking US assets in orbit. The expansion gave the universe a “new mission set.” It’s about denializing China’s ability to monitor American satellites in real time.
However, Saltzman warned that the United States was behind. Space budgets have been reduced in absolute terms, even as space becomes an increasingly contested military territory. He said lawmakers still operate with a “invisible, heartless” mindset.
“It’s still a low priority in terms of policy regime,” Salzman said. “Modern battlefields need to explain the space domain. If they cannot continue to protect the use of the domain – and they cannot deny the enemy. It will be tied to the military targets of one of the other domains.

“I believe there are more missions than funding,” Saltzman said, adding that space forces still lack the size and capabilities needed to carry out their expanding responsibility.
For example, the US does not have operational quantum satellites, but China does. Quantum satellites can enable ultra-secure communication and advanced navigation technology.
China’s investment in space-based technology for long-range precision strikes and reusable launch vehicles “represents an inflection point in space access that China could overtake US leadership,” Salzmann said.

Just a few weeks ago, Michael Guetrein’s Deputy Space Force Director revealed that he was practicing the satellite “Dog Fighting,” a sign of China’s increasing ability to carry out complex operations in orbit.
Space Force observes “five different objects in the universe that come and go from one another in synchronization and control,” he said.
“That’s what we call dogfighting in space,” Gutrain said. “They practice tactics, techniques and procedures to perform orbital manipulation from one satellite to another.”
