Tom Hanks’ only daughter shares rare insights about her childhood.
EA Hanks (short for Elizabeth Ann Hanks) blamed Susan Dillingham, the late mother, Oscar winner’s ex-wife, for her husband, who went to the stage name Samantha Lewis for abuse after the couple’s divorce in the ’80s.
According to the 42-year-old, the abuse allegedly began after Dillingham gained primary custody of the now 47-year-old brother Colin Hanks.
“My dad came to pick us up from school, but we’re not there,” Ea Hanks published by people in an excerpt from her book, The 10: A Memoir of Family and the Open Road. “And we’ve been there for two weeks and he has to follow us.”
“The divorce agreement was finally resolved. We visited my father and stepmother (and soon a young half-sibling) over the weekend and summer,” she continued, referring to Tom Hank’s wife, Rita Wilson and son, Chet Hanks, 34, Truman Hanks, 29,” but from ages 5 to 14, he was scattered, religion and escaped.

And what began as a “white house with pillars, a backyard with pools, a bedroom with horses photographs on every wall” eventually turned into a “smoke smell.”
“As the years passed, my backyard was full of dog s and I couldn’t walk around it,” she recalls. “The fridge was either exposed or full of expired food. My mother spent more and more time pondering her Bible, pondering her and her big four poster bed. One night, her emotional violence became physical violence.”
Tom Hanks, who played Colonel John Miller in the film “Saving Private Ryan,” spoke with Peter Alexander of Normandy on the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
Ea Hanks said that when she lived with her mother until the middle of seventh grade, her custody arrangements reversed, allowing her to travel to Los Angeles while visiting Sacramento over the weekend and summer. During her junior year of high school, E-Hanks wrote that Dillingham called her to say she was dying.
Dillingham passed away in 2002 at the age of 49 after battling bone cancer.
Tom Hanks was rarely spoken about his divorce. In a 2020 interview, he described it as “a horrifying, painful time,” and talked about the impact of breaking up on his own, EA and Colin Hanks.
“I couldn’t be a worse father, I couldn’t be a worse person,” said the star, “Digit deeper with Graham Bensinger,” and “Private Ryan of Salvation.” “I think one of the things I’ve learned, as a parent, is trying to ensure a carefree life for your child as long as possible.
