Newsom Distance California calls on trading partners to exclude states from retaliation from Trump’s tariffs

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Friday again distanced the state from President Donald Trump, urging international trade partners to remove the product from retaliation measures imposed on the US as a result of the new tariffs.

The Newsom administration will pursue its own “strategic trade relations” with international trade partners to protect “manufacturers, workers, farmers, businesses and supply chains.”

“California leads the country as the number one state in agriculture and manufacturing, and it is our workers, families and farmers who support this Trump tax rise and losing the most in the trade war,” Newsom said in a statement. “For our international partners: As the fifth largest economy in the world, Golden State will continue to be a stable and reliable partner for future generations, regardless of the turbulence that has emerged from Washington.”

“California is not Washington, DC,” he continued.

The governor’s office promoted California’s manufacturing capabilities and innovation in the technical field.

As part of the new push, Newsom said his administration will find ways to expand job creation in areas that rely on international trade, such as manufacturing and agriculture, and how to protect critical supplies that could be affected by tariffs.

Here’s how the newly imposed tariffs will affect California products:

The office said more than 40% of California’s imports come from Mexico, Canada and China. China was hit by a 34% import tax on Wednesday’s “liberation day.” This effectively raises taxes to over 54% when combined with the tariffs already in place.

Canada and Mexico imports are still taxed at a 25% tax rate as of last month’s Trump order.

President Donald Trump and California Gov. Gavin Newsom are walking to talk to reporters after arriving at Air Force 1 at Los Angeles International Airport on Friday, January 24, 2025.

Retaliatory tariffs collected by these countries and other countries on the US will disproportionately affect California, Newsom’s office said. China has already announced a 34% retaliation tariff on April 10 to oppose the US.

The office claims that more than 60,000 small businesses export their export goods across the state.

According to the Associated Press, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris beat California in the 2024 election, or more than 20 points (or Trump with over 3 million votes).

As the most populous state in the United States, Newsom has prioritized “Trump proof” the state amid speculation that it could position itself to head to the White House in 2028.
