Volunteer initiatives to rebuild Altadena Park have elicited mixed reactions from community members affected by the fire that say those resources are better spent directly on Eton Fire victims.
A social media post by Los Angeles County superintendent Kathryn Berger portrayed the outrage of those who shared concerns about the toxicity of the soil the park may have and how volunteer efforts will have a strong impact by directly assisting victims.
The Post has won over 100 comments, and opponents criticize the volunteer’s invitation to bring their own gardening tools and paintbrushes amid the loss of many residents, and host the efforts while community members continue to tackle the loss of their homes. Many also said they lacked time when dealing with post-launch insurance companies due to their glorification efforts.
Residents expressed their frustration with the effort, while others called it a good step towards providing normalcy to their communities.
NBC4 contacted Burger’s office for comments.
The volunteer efforts have been praised as a celebration of Earth Day, and include murals, planting trees and landscaping. Volunteer efforts take place every Saturday from 9am to 2pm in April, with lunch provided.
Berger’s office, Los Angeles County Parks and Recreation, and the Los Angeles County Parks Foundation, are all working together to coordinate the initiative.
