White House Economic Council director Kevin Hassett said that the effectiveness of President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Sunday was doubling the effectiveness of Sunday’s tariffs, with dozens of countries looking to start negotiations, and that U.S. manufacturing is booming.
Hassett claimed when he appeared on ABC News “This Week” with host George Stephanopulos. He said more than 50 countries have already said they want to negotiate a new trade deal with the Trump administration since tariffs hit last week, but admitted that consumers may suffer in the short term.
He pointed to the decline in prices that had existed since China entered the World Trade Organization in 2000, claiming that job losses exceeded low prices.
“If cheap products were the answer, if cheap products were to try to improve the real wages of Americans, then the actual income would have risen during that time. Instead, they fell because wages were lower than they had fallen.

Hassett added that he received “anecdotal words” that some U.S. automotive factories are adding a second shift to their work schedules in response to tariffs.

Stephanopulos then pressed Hassett to explain why Russia did not target additional tariffs.
“There’s clearly been ongoing negotiations with Russia and Ukraine, and I think the President has decided not to blend the two issues. That doesn’t mean that Russia will be treated very differently from all other countries,” replied Hassett.
President Donald Trump shocked the world last week with his big tariff wave.
“But Russia is one of the only countries and one of the few countries that are not subject to these new tariffs, right?” Stephanopoulos pressed.
“They are in the middle of negotiations, George, aren’t they?” Hassett retorted. “Would you recommend that you come in and put a lot of new things on the table in the middle of negotiations that will affect the lives of many Americans, Ukrainians and Russians?”

“Negotiators always do that,” claimed Stephanopoulos.

“Russia is in the middle of negotiations on peace, and it really affects thousands of people, and that’s what President Trump is focusing on now,” Hassett said.
