The Coast Guard will significantly cut nearly $33 million by eliminating “ineffective” programs

Government Efficiency (DOGE) helped the U.S. Coast Guard save $32.7 million by eliminating the “inefficient IT program,” known as the Logistics Information Management System (CG-LIMS).

“Another victory over government efficiency in the DHS!” Homeland Security Secretary Christie Noem said in a statement Monday to Fox News Digital. “Continuing the key work of Doge, the Coast Guard has eliminated invalid IT programs, saved over $32 million and focused on the resources most needed to protect our homeland. The USCG continues to provide the president’s priorities and maximize efficiency while ensuring a boundary and ocean approach.”

Initially, CG-LIM, which began operations in 2027 and was expected to reach full capacity in 2031, was expected to support operations while integrating existing and future capabilities with the Coast Guard.

As designed, CG-LIM modernized the Coast Guard IT system. This, according to the military sector website, has gained increased capabilities and resources, resulting in “significant cost savings and improved logistics integration.”

CG-LIM was also used in 245 cutters, 200 aircraft, 1,800 boats, coast-based systems, navigation equipment, control, communications, computers, cyber, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance equipment.

However, by May 1, 2025, all CG-LIM program activities will be completed.

The termination is the result of the program not being able to fulfill its full requirements in the near future, according to the Coast Guard.

The US$32.7 million savings will be used instead “to address the needs of the emergency Coast Guard,” according to military service. Personnel working on CG-LIM said within the Coast Guard “will be reassigned to meet a significant staffing shortage.”

The Coast Guard said it will continue to search for alternatives to resolve IT logistics gaps and achieve the necessary capabilities envisaged by the services.

“The Coast Guard supports a long-standing tradition of meticulous care driven by our talented, innovative and resourceful workforce,” said Mike Campbell, director of the Coast Guard’s acquisition program and program executive officer. “The end of the acquisition program for the Logistics Information Management System continues to be legacy under Force Design 2028 (FD 2028). Through Force Design 2028, we are updating our efforts to maximize efficiency, identify cost savings, and maximize US return on investment in the Coast Guard.”

According to the Coast Guard, FD 2028 focuses on people, organizations, contracts and acquisitions and technology. It is also said to be a “one generation” effort to investigate and transform the Coast Guard to adapt to current and future environments.
