The Trump administration has fired a senior NATO official recommended by a conservative research group to be fired as part of a broader effort to cleanse the mind from the Pentagon.
Admiral Shoshana Chatfield, the only woman on NATO’s military committee, was fired from the alliance over the weekend without explanation, according to multiple reports. She was one of only a handful of female navy three-star officers and the first woman to lead the Navy War College, which she served until 2023.
Chatfield reportedly received a call from the acting chairman of the co-chief of staff, Christopher Grady, who was told the administration wanted to go in a different direction from work, according to the Associated Press. Officials said they believe the decision was made last week by Defense Secretary Pete Hegses, but it was unclear whether he had received any direction from President Donald Trump. Reuters first reported her firing.

It was unclear whether her dismissal was related to US policy directions regarding North Atlantic Treaty agencies.
Trump and Heggs have spoken out in their claim that the so-called awakening policy is dead and they are actively seeking to promote diversity, equity, inclusion and eliminate leaders who erase DEI programs and online content. The US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, has dumped almost 400 books from libraries containing DEI content.
In December, the American Accountability Foundation (AAF), a conservative research group, wrote to Hegseth with a list of 20 general officers or senior admirals who said they were over-focusing on diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and other similar left-wing initiatives. The AAF wrote that focusing on such policies is a national security obstacle, and that Chatfield was one of the eight women who made the list.
Chatfield made the list in part due to his 2015 speech, declaring that at the time, 80% of the House of Representatives members were men and “our diversity is our strength.” The group said it cited a slide from a presentation by the Institute for Defence Opportunity Management, which emphasized that “investment in gender equality and women’s empowerment can unleash human potential on a transformational scale.”
Chatfield, a naval helicopter pilot who also led the Afghanistan joint reconstruction team, served as one of 32 representatives on NATO’s military committee. According to NATO, the panel is the primary source of military advice to the North Atlantic Council and NATO’s nuclear programme group. It serves as a relationship between political decision makers and the military structure of NATO.

“Trump’s relentless assault on our alliance and careless dismissal of decorated military officials will undermine and undermine our position around the world,” Warner writes in X.
Senator Jack Reid, a ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, reverberated to the president for Chatfield’s firing, and described it as “disgrace.”
Admiral Chatfield is one of the best military personnel our country has to offer, and she distinguishes herself as a representative of the US military at NATO. Her 38-year career as a naval pilot, foreign policy expert and outstanding military educator includes the president of the Navy War College – leaves a lasting legacy throughout the navy and military. Admiral Chatfield’s record of selfless service has not been hurt by President Trump’s actions.
Reed also called on Republicans for not expressing their dissatisfaction with her dismissal, noting that Trump has fired 10 generals and admirals since taking office. This follows the removal of the generals of the National Security Director and US Cyber Command generals on Thursday.
For the Navy, it follows the firing of the first woman to which its top officer, Admiral Lisa Francetti, became chief of the Navy Operation.

“We can’t speculate on how everyone can stand quietly while the president is doing a lot of harm to our military and our country,” Reed said.
“I continue to call for this pointless action and warn me about the dangers of firing military officers as political loyalty. I urge my Republican colleagues to join me in asking President Trump and Secretary Hegses to explain things.”
