President Donald Trump has pitched the idea that self-reporting was originally the brainchild of Senator Mitt Romney, the idea that the driving force behind increasing the number of illegal immigrants would encourage voluntary departures during the president’s bid in 2012.
“The answer is self-abolition. People can’t find work here because there is no legal document to allow them to work here, so they decide that going home can do better,” Romney said during a 2012 Republican debate when asked how the US would deport millions of illegal immigrants in the country.
Romney largely chuckled for that idea during his campaign, including Trump, who told News Axe that Romney’s “Maniacal” and “Crazy” proposals had turned off Latino voters.

Fast forward to 2025, self-abolition has been a central theme in Trump’s efforts to speed up the total number of Trump last month, sending elliptical office video messages to illegal immigrants encouraging Trump to voluntarily leave the country using the CBP Home app.
“Leave now and voluntarily declare yourself. If so, they could have a chance to return legally at some point in the future,” Trump said in the video, adding that “people who don’t declare themselves will be deported and they will not be recognized by the United States again.”
“Voluntarily leaving the US using the CBP Home App is the safest option for illegal aliens,” Trump added.
The message appears to have come home last month, last month, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), shared with Fox News Digital.

The push to increase that number has been accelerated recently, with the administration unveiling a new plan to fine illegal immigrants who have been complied with the orders every day and receive a final order to remove $998 on their days when they stay in the country. That fine is added to the fines of $1,000 to $5,000 for those who claimed they would self-abolize but then did not.
DHS has also released a flyer that spells out the benefits of self-abolition. It boasts that illegal immigrants can maintain the money they earned while they were in the US and maintain their ability to legally migrate to the country in the future.

“Illegal aliens need to self-abolize using the CBP Home app and leave the country now, otherwise they will face consequences,” DHS Deputy Commissioner Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News on Tuesday. “This includes a $998 daily fine for causing illegal foreigners to overstay their final deportation order.”
