The State Department upgraded its travel advisory in El Salvador on Tuesday, ranking Central American countries as safer than some European countries.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised President El Salvador’s President Naive Buquere’s leadership as “important in improving the safety of their country for foreign travelers.”
“Gangster activities, violent crimes and murders in El Salvador have dropped significantly,” Rubio wrote in X, announcing that Salvador’s US travel advisory has been updated to “Level 1: Normal Precautions.”

“Keeping Americans safe overseas is our number one priority,” Rubio wrote.
Many media users said travel advisories in Germany, France, the UK, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden are all “Level 2: Increased movement.”
The State Department warns of an increased risk of “terrorism” in all countries. For France and Spain, “civil unrest” is also considered a concern for American travelers.
