The State Department upgraded its travel advisory in El Salvador on Tuesday, ranking Central American countries as safer than some European countries.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised President El Salvador’s President Naive Buquere’s leadership as “important in improving the safety of their country for foreign travelers.”

“Gangster activities, violent crimes and murders in El Salvador have dropped significantly,” Rubio wrote in X, announcing that Salvador’s US travel advisory has been updated to “Level 1: Normal Precautions.”

The travel advisory states that “gang activity has declined over the past three years” and “this has caused a decrease in violent crimes and murders.”

“Keeping Americans safe overseas is our number one priority,” Rubio wrote.

Many media users said travel advisories in Germany, France, the UK, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands and Sweden are all “Level 2: Increased movement.”

The State Department warns of an increased risk of “terrorism” in all countries. For France and Spain, “civil unrest” is also considered a concern for American travelers.

“El Salvador has gotten the US State Department’s Travel Money Star: Level 1: Get it the safest,” writes Bukel.

“Right now, El Salvador is safer than most of Europe,” wrote an X user with millions of followers. In response to the contrast, tech billionaire Elon Musk, who leads government efficiency, replied “Amazing.”

Musk is a critic of the voices of Western Europe’s massive migration, and earlier this year the billionaire campaigned on behalf of Germany’s alternative Für Deutschland (AFD) party ahead of the national election in February.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump welcomed Bucquere to the White House on April 14, saying, “We spoke about El Salvadoran’s partnership on using Supermax prisons for members of the MS-13 gang, and how the collaboration with El Salvador with the US was modelled on Tuesday with Secretary General Caroline Levitt.

Homeland Security Secretary Christi Noem recently visited the Terrorist Confinement Centre, the abbreviation of Cecot for El Salvador. There, the Trump administration has excluded more than 200 people so far under the alien enemy law of 1798.
