NEW YORK (WPIX) – Several people reportedly died after a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River off Manhattan on Thursday.
Sources told Nexstar’s WPIX and the Associated Press that six people were killed in the crash. The two, who described the rescue efforts, told the New York Times that three children and two adults had been pulled out of the water, but their condition was unknown.
Authorities have not yet provided information on how many people are on board or their terms.
Firefighters confirmed that crash crashes on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River were first reported just after 3pm on Thursday.
Videos posted on social media show Bell 206 is mostly submerged and upside down underwater. Police were nearby and a police helicopter was seen overhead.
The fire department said there are units at the scene where the rescue operation is being carried out. Several emergency crews were seen responding to the area in separate videos. See below for more information about this.
The rescue ship was located near the site near the Manhattan waterfront and near the edge of the long maintenance pier of one of the ventilation towers in the Dutch Tunnel.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board investigate conflicts.
Manhattan skies are regularly filled with private recreational aircraft and both commercial and tourist airplanes and both planes and helicopters. Manhattan has several helipads that will bubble into destinations across the metropolitan area with business executives and others.
Over the years, there have been multiple crashes, including a 2009 collision between an airplane and a tourist helicopter that killed nine people, and a 2018 charter helicopter that went down to the East River and killed five people.
