Elewon grocery store in Santa Monica has closed its tonic bar after spotting cockroaches at its facility, the company said Thursday.
The luxury grocery story was closed after the LA County Public Health discovered that it described in a public report as “pest invasion.”
“We deeply regret the discovery of a cockroach in the tonic bar,” said an Elewon spokesman in a statement by The Times. “I sincerely apologize for this lapse by our standards.”
A store clerk who spoke with the Times on Thursday said two cockroaches had been found.
A spokesman for the Elewin company said the shop “voluntarily” closed the tonic bar where it made coffee, tea, juices and smoothies, overseeing the thorough hygiene process. The company said it hopes to resume tonic bars later on Thursday.
In recent years, the popularity of luxury grocery chains has skyrocketed. It cultivates shopper supporters who visit regularly to buy prepared meals and expensive, celebrity-supported smoothies.
Three more locations are set to open in Southern California this year.
In the order of closure of the Santa Monica location, the public health department found that the store had “major” issues regarding “rodents, insects, birds or animals,” according to records posted online.
