Lawmakers reveal whether illegal immigrants should qualify for Medicaid

California has a $6.2 billion budget deficit in Medicaid services, and Democrat government Gavin Newsom’s latest budget proposal project will spend an astounding $8.4 billion to cover Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid version of Medi-Cal, for illegal immigration in 2024-2025.

Two new reports by the Bureau of Economic Analysis found that the US economy is increasingly dependent on government handouts. Qualifications are growing faster than tax receipts and wages. Private wages increased by $67 billion in early 2025, while government payments to recipients increased by $162 billion.

In North Carolina and California, growth in Medicaid benefits was a major contributor to the rise in personal income. Under California’s Medi-Cal’s $6.2 billion budget gap, undocumented immigrant compensation is contributing to a surge in personal income.

Fox News Digital asked Capitol Hill lawmakers if taxpayers need to obtain Medicaid tabs for illegal immigration. Popular progressive Senator Adam Schiff and D-Calif. Michael Bennett, D-Colo. I-Vt. Bernie Sanders of the United States refused to say whether illegal immigrants are entitled to Medicaid benefits funded by US taxpayers.

Sen. John Husted, who was tapped by moderate Republican governor Mike DeWine on behalf of Senate Vice President JD Vance this year, told Fox News Digital it is illegal for Americans to fund health care for illegal immigrants.

Newsom acknowledges that surge in illegal healthcare costs are “partial” contributors to Medicaid issues

“If that is determined, the costs should be returned to California. If people are here illegally here, taxpayers in this country can barely pay our own bills in this country and if there are no people, then we should not put bills for their health care.

R-FLA Rep. Maria Salazar, who serves on the House Committee on Diplomacy and Small Businesses, said he does not support federal funding for the federal program for illegal immigration.

“We need to look at these numbers,” Salazar said. “I don’t support undocumented immigration in the United States using any kind of federal funding or federal programs because if you are not documented, you cannot use government or federal services.

“But I need to know what the numbers are. I believe construction, hospitality, agriculture, illegals, undocumented people are giving a lot to the economy.”

Sen. Mike Lee, a fiscal conservative who serves on the Economic and Commercial Committee, said programs like Medicaid are only for US citizens.

“They are certainly not there because of illegal aliens. And this costs Americans a lot. So yeah, that’s a problem and that’s something we need to fix,” Lee said.

Sen. Richard Blumenthal was asked about the policy and said he wanted to learn more about Medicaid’s interests for undocumented immigrants.

“We’re not taking Medicaid from people with disabilities, seniors who need long-term care,” said another Northeast Democrat, Sen. Andy Kim, DN.J.

R-Wis. Sen. Ron Johnson of the group said “it could threaten the interests of children with disabilities.”

R-Tenn is a Trump loyalist. Sen. Marsha Blackburn said he made a “conscious decision” to allow California to convince the tab on illegal immigrant health care.

“They are fully aware and appreciate that the federal government should not use one penny until taxpayers send that penny to the Treasury,” Blackburn said.

R-Wyo. Sen. Cynthia Ramis said they need to be aware of the impact California has on other states.

“Many people in Wyoming live their paychecks to pay, and they struggle to pay for things they could take for granted, like food and gasoline.

“The increased costs of the Medicaid program are driven by multiple factors, including expansion, increased enrollment for all populations, and pharmacy costs,” a Newsom spokesman said when Fox News Digital reached for comment.

Newsom’s Office emphasizes that Medi-Cal covers around 15 million Californians, accounting for more than a third of the state’s population. The cost of the program has more than doubled over the past decade, according to the governor’s office.

Given the size of Medi-Cal, Newsom’s Office says that even a 1-2% increase in drug prices and hospital visits could mean billions of dollars in additional programs, with states on the national and political spectrum facing an increase in Medicaid costs, particularly in Pennsylvania and Indiana.
