Funeral Mass, located in the heart of the Immaculate Confession at Mary Catholic Church, welcomed a full home for those hoping to pay tribute to the family of 13-year-old Oscar Omar Hernandez, who died last week in Oxnard.
The service was held in Spanish as the family was originally from Honduras. Oscar Omar only lived in the United States for about three years.
His family last saw him on March 28th. They dropped him off at the station to visit Lancaster’s soccer coach.
Authorities discovered his body five days later on April 2nd on the side of the road in Oxnard.
His soccer coach, Mario Edgardo Garcia Aquino, was charged with first-degree murder in Oscar’s death.
“He’s like my brother, I’m like his sister and I think it’s really sad to see him here,” said Oscar’s friend Magalie Davila. “We hang out at lunchtime and at school anytime. We met him the week before he passed away.”
“I’m very sad because he was an innocent child. My daughter says he was very humble and acted well at school. My daughter is very sad that he’s passed away,” Magalley’s mother, Anna Velazquez, said.
As they were carrying cas from the church, Oscar’s mother Gladys fainted on top of it. An ambulance was called and she is now recovering.
A church spokesman said she was overcome by emotions.
Hernandez’s family issued a statement on Saturday:
“We are devastated by the unimaginable loss of our beloved son Oscar Omar Hernandez Bautista. His bright spirit and love for football have brought joy to everyone who knows him.
Private burials will be held in the next few days.
