Famous “Squad” member MP Ilhan Omar effectively closed his door in 2026 with rumors searching for an open Senate seat in Minnesota and announced his bid for the house election.
“It’s more important than ever to fight back against the turmoil, corruption and calmness in the Trump administration when our rights are under attack,” the Minneapolis Democrat told Minnesota Public Radio.
“In Minnesota, we know that organised people always beat organised money. Our campaign is ready to build on our efforts to organize successful grassroots to help us get back to our mid-term record turnout and get back to our majority,” she said.
She gently won the final race of the fifth congressional district seat, beating Iraqi-born Republican journalist Dalia Al-Aqidi by about 50 points.

Omar was one of several names stolen last month as the successor to Senator Tina Smith, who announced she would not seek reelection.
Almost immediately, Democrats Gov. Peggy Flanagan threw his hat in the ring, but Omar and other potential candidates at the top remained silent.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (DN.Y.), one of Omar’s fellow “team” members, is rumoured to be his main 2028 opponent against Senate minority leader Charles Schumer.
February, Smith – originally appointed by the then Gov. Mark Dayton has replaced Senator Al Franken after resigning over allegations of sexual misconduct – in February she said she is ready to spend more time with her family.
“This decision is not political and not entirely personal, but it’s not lost to me that our country now needs stronger progressive leadership than ever,” Smith said.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Waltz also refused to search for Smith’s seat, leaving his lieutenant, Flanagan, the best Democrat in the race to date.
“At this point, I don’t want my thumb to scale in any way,” Waltz said in February.
“We know we have a deep bench. We have good people,” said Walz, who might consider a third term at St. Paul.
If elected, Flanagan, Ojibwe, will be the fifth senator in Native American heritage, along with Oklahoma Republican Mark Wayne Marin, and the second in office now.

On the Republican side, retired Marine and Navy seal Adam Schwartze announced the bid, calling it “the most important mission of all theirs.”
Additionally, former Sacramento Kings player Lois White has announced his own bid. White previously lost the 2024 GOP Senate primary.
Smith’s race for success will be the land of the first open Senate race of 10,000 lakes since 2006. Dayton refused to be reelected, and Sen. Amy Klobuchar defeated the then-rep. Mark Kennedy, R-Minn. , about 19 points.
Franken supported Flanagan.
