Two former Torrance police officers recently pleaded guilty to vandalism charges after plastering the victim’s car on a sw sw in January 2020.
Christopher Tomsick and Cody Weldin pleaded guilty on Thursday after first suing their innocence to the 2021 charges.
The victim’s vehicle was tied up to the theft of reported mail and taken to a tow yard. When the defendants in the mail theft case began to pick up the car, they discovered sw painted on the back seat of the car and happy face painted on the front seat.
“Destroying property with hateful messages is condemned and violates the oath that officers sworn to maintain the law, protect and serve the community,” district attorney Nathan J. Hochman said.
Tom Chick, 32, and Weldin, 32, pleaded guilty to each of the felony vandalism, and were sentenced to two years of formal probation, compensation for the victim, certification of standards and training (post) for peace officers, 100 hours of community service, tours of the museum of tolerance, 15 hours of anti-racial coursework, and DA office stats.
Additionally, authorities said Tom Chick and Weldin “will never work again as police officers in our state,” Hochmann said.
The Torrance Police Department was praised by the DA’s office for its prompt action against officers.
“The actions of these former officers were dishonorable and violated the core values of our department,” said Torrance Police Chief Jeremiah Hart.
A progress report is scheduled for July 10th at the Clara Shortridge Fortz Criminal Justice Center.
