Cuomo Lands Key Labor Union Bucking as Commback Bid for NYC Mayor gets excited

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo introduces the support of two powerful unions as he runs for mayor of the country’s most populous city.

The former 3rd Democratic governor, who resigned amid multiple scandals in 2021, was approved on Monday by the labor group 32BJ SEIU and the Hotel and Games Trade Council.

The highly coveted support in the heavily organized New York City could further strengthen Cuomo’s frontline position in the Democratic mayoral primary in June.

“The members of @32bjseiu and @nyhtc are the backbone of New York. They clean our buildings, run our hotels, take care of our community and keep the city running. Without a strong middle class, we cannot thrive.

He then emphasized, “I have fought men and women at 32BJ and HTC over the years. Their faith in me is a huge boost to our campaign and I am proud to have their support.”

The two unions totaling together have over 120,000 workers in their ranks, and are the latest organised labor groups supporting Cuomo.

Who is the front runner for New York City’s mayoral race?

Cuomo’s March 1 launch of the campaign rocked the race in an already crowded field of competitors. More than two months into the June 24th primary, Cuomo is a clear voting and fundraising frontrunner in the Democratic mayoral race. And the winner of the Democratic primary will be considered the overwhelming frontrunner in a solid blue New York City in the mayoral election in November.

However, as the mayoral race in 2025 was a loss to Cuomo, his rival focuses on the former governor’s immeasurable political baggage.

Cuomo fought to clear his name after 11 sexual harassment charges he repeatedly denied over the past four years – forcing him to resign as governor in August 2021.

The former governor repeatedly denied the fraud.

Adams’ polls sank before he was charged with five counts last year. This denounced the mayor of bribery and fraud as part of a “long-term” scheme to personally benefit from contact with foreigners.

The mayor repeatedly overtured the current President Donald Trump, and in February the Justice Department moved to dismiss the corruption charges, allowing him to help with the Trump administration in crackdown on illegal immigration.

New York City’s top federal prosecutor resigned rather than complying, claiming that the mayor agreed to Quid Pro Quo with the Department of Justice.

In the final move, a federal judge dismissed the Justice Department’s lawsuit against the mayor earlier this month, but claimed that the Trump administration’s basis for bringing the lawsuit dropped “a bargain smack.”

A few days later, Adams announced that he would forget the Democratic primary and run for reelection as an independent.
