Easter Monday could soon become a federal holiday under new legislative proposals.
Senator Eric Schmidt, R-Mo. and Rep. Riley Moore, R.W. Va. is leading the way in law to celebrate the day after Easter Sunday as a public holiday and several other countries are also aware of the holidays.
In a thread posted on X, Schmidt cited a poll that found that 81% of Americans celebrated Easter as of 2023, according to the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics.
“This is not a radical idea. It is a federal perception of traditions at the heart of Western civilization. It is a tradition that is already recognized as a public holiday in the West (and beyond!) that includes Canada, Australia, New Zealand and much of Western Europe,” said a Republican lawmaker.

“Easter is a floating holiday. It could fall from March 22nd to April 25th. The only gap for two months on the federal holiday calendar is April May. Easter Monday holidays fill the gap. Create a three-day weekend that workers and families need most.
“There’s also a lot of practical debate. Easter weekends have already generated around $15 billion for our economy. On a three-day weekend, we can increase economic activity by up to $2 billion while strengthening our American families, at an estimated 10-15%.”
There are 11 public federal public holidays. That is, along with many private sectors, the federal public sector is being shut down.

The most recent public holidays are June. It aims to recognize the abolition of slavery in the United States. It was signed into law in 2021 by former President Joe Biden.
Christmas Day is the only traditionally religious holiday on the list.
Easter is Sunday and is considered the highest holiday in the Christian faith to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus after the cross on Good Friday. Additionally, it is widely regarded in the US as a spring celebration with Easter bunny and egg hunting.

“The passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ are the most important events in the history of the world.” Christ broke the prison of death, and the victorious roses fell from the underworld,” tweeted Moore.
Senate Bill 1426 was introduced by Schmidt on Thursday and introduced to the Senate Judiciary Committee.
