The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors approved the 3-0 motion on Tuesday, doubleping the street acquisition and sideshow fine.
The sideshow is when a group of cars take over street races and a big intersection and carry out burnout.
“The street acquisitions have been occurring in Los Angeles since the 1980s, but they have increased dramatically since the Covid-19 pandemic and become increasingly dangerous.
The current civil penalty for drivers is $500. If approved, the new move doubles it to $1,000.
The proposal also aims to enable “demoted profiles and demo profiles that promote illegal sideshows on major social media platforms.”
“Live streaming of these illegal events creates an influx of participants, making local environments more prone to rapid growth in illegality, and often overwhelms the efforts of law enforcement to mitigate and disband events,” the move reads.
Tuesday’s vote means the board will support the motion. A separate vote must be made to fully approve the language of the proposal.
Street racing has been a problem in Los Angeles for a long time. In 2024, the city reported 176 street races between January and March, an increase of nearly 50% from the same period in 2023.
