Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday that the US may be ready to “move ahead” from efforts to the Russian-Ukraine peace contract without progress in the coming days.
Rubio spoke in Paris after marathon day of the landmark meeting between us, Ukrainians and European officials, saying the discussion was constructive and produced an outline of measures for peace.
French officials said a new meeting of the same format is expected in London in the coming days. Rubio says he can attend the meeting, which is expected earlier in the week.
“We haven’t reached the point where we need to decide whether this is possible or not,” Rubio told reporters as he left.
After weeks of efforts by the Trump administration to mediate a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, Rubio said “we will decide in the next few days whether this is viable in the coming weeks.”
France held high-level consultations on Thursday to discuss Ukraine and its security. This is the first time since President Donald Trump’s inauguration, where top officials from America, Ukraine and Europe met together to discuss the end of the war. The conference came as European concerns grew up about Trump’s ready to approach Russia.
Rubio and his presidential envoy, Steve Witkov, have guided us in our efforts to seek peace. Several negotiations have been held in Saudi Arabia. Witkov met with Putin three times, Rubio said.
Moscow effectively refused to accept a comprehensive ceasefire promoted by Trump and supported by Ukraine. Russia is conditioned on Ukraine’s mobilization efforts and the halt of Western arms supply, a demand rejected by Ukraine.
