Gov. Gavin Newsom announced late Thursday that California would sue the Trump administration over cutting the government’s Department of Efficiency Department’s Americancorps.
“We went from the New Deal, the new frontier, the great society to the federal government that gives middle fingers to volunteers serving our fellow Americans, and we sue to stop this,” Newsom said in a statement.
Americanorps’ National Civilian Community Corps told volunteers on Tuesday that they would be closing the program early “due to a program situation beyond your control,” according to an email obtained by the Associated Press.

The Trump administration placed most senior Americanorps employees on leave Wednesday as Doge prepares to implement spending cuts across its agents.
Americaorps NCCC employs more than 2,000 people aged 18 to 26 who are participating in the service period for about 10 months, according to the program’s website. The team of corps members is tasked with working on several projects related to education, housing, urban and rural development, land conservation and disaster relief, driving from one mission to another across the country.
According to the program, agents will pay basic volunteer expenses, including housing, diet, “limited health benefits,” and “conservative” living allowances. The program also offered members who complete a 1,700-hour service period to fund future education expenses or apply for specific student loans. This profit was worth around $7,300 this year.
Newsom also announced that California will accelerate its recruitment of programs for the California Services Corps. “Members of the Corps will support the community by taking climate action, helping students succeed, working to end disaster-affected, hunger, and connecting vulnerable people to important resources and services, and supporting the community by mentoring and mentoring students,” according to the program’s website.
The new lawsuit comes after Newsom and state Attorney General Rob Bonta made California the first state to sued Trump for tariffs.
