Good Friday, a religious day for Catholic and Christian rituals, is not a federal public holiday, but it is closed on that day.
Good Friday comes before the Easter celebration, and is one of five Christian celebrations to commemorate the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday.
It is observed by religious communities, but is not recognized as a federal holiday. The US Department of Commerce lists 11 federally certified holidays, including New Year’s Day, Rev. Martin Luther King’s birthday, George Washington’s birthday, Memorial Day, National Independence Day in June, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Twelve US states recognize Good Friday as a state public holiday: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Texas, Tennessee. In these areas, state offices are adhered to.
Whether you’re observing Good Friday or running Easter-related errands, you may be closed, open, or shortened opening hours.
