A pregnant street vendor is suing a woman who was arrested for a battery for potential hate crimes after being pushed into the ground in Shimi Valley.
The interaction caught in Monday’s video shows that Mary, an eight-month pregnant ice cream vendor, faces police, identified as Julie Sanchez, 56, a resident of the Simi Valley.
In the video, I heard that Sanchez said, “American. English.”
It is unclear what led to the interaction before it was filmed.
Mary says this is the third time a neighbor has yelled at her, but this is the first time she has faced her physically.
“I really don’t understand,” Mary said in Spanish. “The only thing I was saying was to let me pass.”
Mary has never been to a woman’s property and usually pushes a cart on the street, she said. Video footage captured Sanchez pushing the cart into the vendor and knocking her down.
Neighbors and passersby say Mary had no problems and often said she would buy items from her, but she waited with her until the police arrived and came to her aid.
“When we interviewed, she was pissed that the vendors were selling ice cream on the streets without permission, said Simi Valley Police and Sergeant Rick Morton.
At a press conference Friday, Mary’s lawyers asked her to file accusations of hate crimes in the lawsuit.
For now, Sanchez is scheduled for court on May 14th to charge the battery. The NBCLA tried to speak to Sanchez at her residence, but the 56-year-old declined.
