Officials say the man said officers were taken into custody early Sunday after suffering a medical emergency while police arrested for “unstable.”
According to a department press release, the man was first spotted around 12:31am after Fullerton police officers closed at Lemon Park. Police said the man appeared to carry a smoldering cardboard box and was “behaving unstable.”
As more officers arrived, police said the man became uncooperative and began to physically resist. More officers were called to provide assistance, and according to the department it took some of them to gain control of the man and put him in restraint.
Police said he “causing injuries and biting the officer on his arm vigorously.”
The Fullerton Fire Department responded to treat both the suspect and the officer. Minutes later, the arrested appeared to have a medical emergency, according to his release. Police said paramedics launched life-saving measures and took the man to a nearby hospital where he was declared to have died.
According to the department, an officer was released after receiving some medical treatment at the hospital.
Investigators from the Orange County District Attorney’s Office responded to an independent investigation into the death, police said.
