The convicted murderer who fled custody in Southern California late last year and was accused of murdering a Mexican police officer in an elite unit known as the “Gringo Hunter” was arrested in Tijuana last week, according to media reports.

Cesar Hernandez, 35, a US citizen, was convicted of killing a man outside a bar in Southeast Los Angeles in June 2019 and sentenced to 80 years in prison for possible parole.

On December 2, 2024, he was expected to escape custody of the California Department of Corrections and enter a non-contest petition for the manufacture of weapons within his cell, just before he arrived at Caen County Superior Court in Delano.

Although CDCR officials did not confirm or deny it, there were several reports suggesting that Hernandez used a makeshift key to spurred handcuffs and bondage while driving to the courthouse.

If accurate, the claim answers questions raised in many questions after an exclusive video obtained by KTLA sister station Kget.

Despite the important manhunt, the 35-year-old made it all the way to Mexico.

On April 9, Mexican police force Gringo Hunter was formed to cooperate with US authorities in arresting a fugitive across the border, and performed surgery to capture Hernandez in the border town of Tijuana.

The 35-year-old, who is said to be dressed as a cleaner, fired on Mexican police forces and attacked 33-year-old Abigail Esparza Reyes, commander of 33-year-old Abigail Esparza Reyes, and managed to escape.

More than a week later, on April 17, the 35-year-old fugitive was arrested and successfully arrested by Mexican authorities in Tijuana, the Los Angeles Times reported.

It is unclear whether Hernandez will be charged in Mexico, California, or both.
