Pope Francis dies at 88 – NBC Los Angeles

Pope Francis was a popular Roman Catholic pope who advocated a more caring pope and traditionalist approach than his predecessor. He was 88 years old.

“At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome of Francis returned to his father’s house. His life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and his church,” said Cardinal Kevin Ferrell of Vatican Camerlengo in the announcement.

Francis, former Jorge Mario Bergolio Cardinal of Buenos Aires, was the first non-European Pope in over a thousand years, chosen in 2013.

Francis refocused the Pope, moving away from issues such as environment, immigration, equality and other more controversial topics. He rejected the Vatican’s gorgeous traps, criticised the church for accepting the poor and saying that he was obsessed with abortion, gay marriage and birth control.

He wrote the first Pope’s letter or cyclelical on the environment, warning that the world must protect against global warming.

According to NBC, during his historic visit to the United States in 2015, he gave the Philadelphia crowd the impression that “it’s a dangerous temptation to people who are not part of our group, those who are “not like us,” because they are asking questions about the workings of the spirit.” “It not only blocks conversion to faith, it’s a perversion of faith.”

He was negligent because he wasn’t doing enough to confront the sexual abuse scandal that convulsed the church. In 2019, he issued the first law requiring staff to report cases to their superiors.

According to the Catholic News Agency, Francis was born on December 17, 1936 in Buenos Aires. His father was a railway worker who immigrated from Italy to Argentina. His mother’s family also has Italian origins.

He was appointed priest as a Jesuit in 1969 and served as president, pastor and professor of the seminary before becoming Pope at the age of 76. He was the first Latin America and the first Jesuits.

His choice was unexpected. According to NBC News, when he was introduced from the balcony of St. Peter’s Cathedral, there was a shortness of breath and applause continued. In Italian, he joked, “As you know, the duty of Conclave is to give a bishop to Rome. My brother cardinals almost went to the end of the world.”

As Pope, he took the name of St. Francis, Catholic monk of Assisi, known for his life in poverty.

Francis was described by NBC News as a “great compassion” conservative. During his time as a pontiff, he did not change the doctrine of the Church, but he led the Church in a new direction.

He encouraged priests to welcome divorced Catholics, gay and lesbian couples, as well as those who lived together without marrying. He invited members of the transgender community south of Rome to lunch as guests, marking the World Day of the Poor People. When he challenged the conservative cardinals to affirm homosexual education, he suggested that this could be a way to celebrate same-sex unions, the Associated Press reported.

Traditionalists opposed Francis’ progressive reforms. They looked against the teachings of the Church. In 2018, former Vatican ambassador, U.S. Ambassador, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, called on Francis to resign.

Ten years after his pope, Francis criticized what he called a “setback” for some conservatives in the American church and accused them of replacing them with ideology, the Associated Press reported.

He removed the bishop from Joseph Strickland’s position in Tyler, Texas, who was a fierce critic of Francis, who wrote in a tweet that he “undermines the deposits of faith.”

Francis then ousted another candid opponent from his Vatican apartment to Cardinal Raymond Burke, his reform, and canceled his salary.

The Pope was forced to cancel his address at the UN Climate Conference in Dubai due to lung inflammation. He only had one fully functional lung after the other lungs were partially removed due to infection when he was a teenager. He has had a series of medical problems in recent years, including knee problems, sciatica, hernia and surgery on his colon.
