Parishists and world leaders around the world are lamenting the loss of Pope Francis, including California Governor Gavin Newsom.
In a statement, the governor said Pope Francis, who died Monday at the age of 88, “[see] God of all his creatures. ”
“[First Partner] Jennifer and I are part of a world that laments the death of Pope Francis. He sees God in all his creatures, reminds us of the human duty to the world we live in, and asks us to “take care of each other and love the custodians of creation.”

“He defended human dignity, especially the dignity of the poor, called the world for urgent climate action, condemned the death penalty, and confronted painful truths, including the role of the church in the massacre of Indigenous peoples,” Newsom’s statement continued. “His Pope was characterized by moral courage, a deep respect for all creation, and a deep belief in the transformative power of healing and unity.”

The Pope’s death comes just after one day on Easter Sunday, shortly after fighting respiratory illnesses in the hospital for 38 days.
His final release was the Easter Morning Blessing and Popemobile Tour through St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City, where he met with US Vice President J.D. Vance earlier in the day.

Vance also responded to the death of the Pope in a social media message saying that he is “happy” to see him, but he is “evidently very sick.”
“My heart is directed at millions of Christians around the world who love him,” Vance said.
At SOCAL, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and local parishioners are grieving Pope Francis’ death. Archbishop of Los Angeles Jose H. Gomez praised him, noting that the Pope is often interested in the issues of Southern California residents.
“It was just January [Pope Francis] Gomez said in a statement. “I will never forget the comfort of his brother as I lamented the sudden takeover of my beloved Bishop David O’Connell in 2023,” Gomez said in a statement.
Celebrities like Whoopi Goldberg, who met the Pope twice, also paid tribute on social media, as well as Antonio Banderas, Russell Crowe and Donatella Versace.
